Olam SVI’s onion plant in Fernley, Nevada is the world’s only onion dehydration facility utilizing direct geothermal power. Naturally occurring superheated steam is drawn up from tube wells and used to dry the onions, reducing natural gas usage and dehydration cost significantly. After dehydration, the water is poured back into the ground, thereby ensuring no depletion of the water table and maintaining the natural balance of the ecosystem.
